Botanical Description

Leaves two or three to each bulb, strap-shaped, arching, to 25cm long by 5-12mm wide, dark green. Flowering stems up to 20cm in height, erect and leafless and appearing before the leaves. Flowers fragrant, in terminal umbels of four to nine, each one to 1.5cm or more in diameter, composed of six spreading tepals. The latter are generally white with a central green stripe, but chocolate and paler tints of brown are reported, late summer to early autumn. Native to rocky limestone hillsides, the bulbs often in crevices which are partially shaded. A unique bulbous plant most nearly related to Leucojum and Galanthus. In the past it has been classified in Crinum (1825) and Narcissus (1714).
