Botanical Description

Mat to low hummock-forming, eventually up to 30cm across. Leaves usually lanceolate to elliptic, sometimes obovate, 3-5cm long. Flowers trumpet-shaped, up to 6 or 7cm long, deep blue, green-spotted within, the calyx lobes ovate and spreading at the tips, solitary and erect on stems 2-8cm long, late spring to summer. Alps and Carpathians to northeast Spain, Italy and Yugoslavia, in acid grassland, stony areas and bogs at 1400-3000m. 'G.a. Alba', has white flowers; 'Coelestina', is Cambridge blue. G. acaulis was formally (and sometimes still is) used to cover a group of closely related species; see also GG. alpina, angustifolia, clusii, dinarica, ligustica and occidentalis, [Pl.192]
