Botanical Description

Tuber with rough greyish bark when mature, to 5cm diameter, rooting from one side of the base. Leaves broadly cordate, often shallowly lobed, toothed or note, 4-14cm long, deep grey-green above, marbled with grey or creamy-white. Flowers appearing before, or with, the young leaves, sweetly fragrant, white or very pale pink, with a M-shaped magenta blotch at the base of each lobe; petal-lobes narrowly oblong, twisted and auricled, autumn to early winter. Fruit with pedicel coiling from the top downwards. Western and northern Cyprus, growing in shady rocky places beneath trees and shrubs, sometimes in scree, sea level to 1200m. Generally grown as a pan plant in the frame or alpine house where they need to be protected from severe frost. Flas succeeded outdoors in some mild districts, given a very sheltered dryish site.
