perennial with stems to 40cm long. Leaves composed of seven to eleven cuneate glaucous leaflets. Flowers 12-18mm long, yellow in umbels of three to nine, late spring to summer. Turkey (Anatolia), Iran, Crimea, Georgia, Armenia and Caucasus, in stony ground and waste places up to 2300m Co . subsp. balansae (syn. C. cappadocica var. balansae) is generally smaller and more tufted with oblong-cuneate leaflets and larger rounded stipules (those of C. orientalis are obovate to cuneate, to 5mm long). Only above 2000m in alpine pastures.
