Plant often rather straggling. Leaves with two to six teeth. Flowers reddish-purple to violet, rarely white, 1.5-2.5cm in diameter. Southern Greece, Aegean region to Sicily, among mountain rocks and screes. Sometimes naturalised in southern and western Europe. A.d. var. sicula (from Sicily) hasa compact growth habit and toothless leaves. See entry below under Cultivated Varieties.
