Botanical Description

In the wild 5-30cm across, but usually less in cultivation. Rosettes globular to cup-shaped, fairly loose. Leaves elliptic to linear, 5-10mm long, sometimes much less, clad with small branched hairs. Flowers shortly stalked, singly from the leaf axils, one to several per rosette, 7-9mm wide, pink or white with a yellow eye. European Alps, where the rocks are non-alkaline, on gritty, rubbly slopes above 2000m. A vigorous species, but apt to wither suddenly in patches, and if the dead growth is not promptly removed, the whole plant can perish. Dislikes alpine house treatment.
