Bulbs almost globular, solitary or eventually in small clumps. Stems 45-90cm tall. Leaves shorter than stems, l-5cm wide. Flowers star-like, about 1.5cm across, purple-violet, many, in dense spherical umbels to 10cm in diameter, early summer. Turkestan. Probably confused in cultivation with A. stipitatum which has hairy leaf undersurfaces. Handsome, but perhaps too large for the rock garden.
