Botanical Description

tall sometimes more. Leaves 8-15cm long, bipinnate, the narrowly ovate leaflets deeply cut into narrow pointed lobes. Flowers bowl-shaped to flat, 3-5cm in diameter composed of twenty to thirty yellow petals, late winter to spring. Japan, Korea, China and eastern Siberia, on open slopes, sometimes amongst scrub. Much grown in Japan where several cultivars have arisen, some of which are available in the west, e.g. A.a. 'Fukujukai' (larger golden flowers), 'Nadeshiku' (fringed, satiny, lime-yellow petals) and 'Pleniflora' (syn. 'Plena' and 'Flore-pleno') (double flowers).
